He followed her more than once when she went to practice. She'd always gone out of her way to hide the fact that she was training; it messed with her image. Her wiles, though, had never kept him completely in the dark. He was her captain, after all. It had only taken him two tries to figure out where she went to practice with her zanpakutou.

Somehow, this place fit her. He leaned against a wide tree trunk, shaking his head at the overgrown and wild brush that dominated this particular area. Wild. Undisciplined. Stretching beyond set boundaries. It fit her, and her practice style.
She'd never find bankai. Not this way.

She didn't have the control. She aimed for it, kept it carefully hidden behind brainless jokes and her flamboyant clothing, but she craved it as much as the rest of them did. It made him wonder if she knew how much he read into her little game. That was due to the endless hours spent in her company watching her hide behind her mask. Efficient, perhaps, against all but a few.

Maybe it was just perspective or the uniqueness of their work habits. He didn't acknowledge that he wasn't the only one who could see beneath the layers. That would have been pointless.

But she was still there practicing. Stretching and reaching, aiming for something that was just out of her fingertips' reach. She didn't practice enough, didn't let go of her mask long enough to dig deep enough. She pushed, but she never broke herself down and analyzed herself quite far enough. She still wasn't there.

But as much as he saw where she reached and failed, he had no idea how to help her find that control she lacked. He didn't even know if she'd want the help or turn him away, or if she even realized where she hesitated just a bit too much.

He shook his head. It was her choice, her method, her zanpakutou. He couldn't begin to tell her how to train. So instead he watched over her silent struggles, offering his own silent encouragement in her hunt for the control she craved. She would get there eventually and be stronger for it.

He could only hope it was sooner rather than later. With the way things were creeping in on them, she would need that control more than he would.

He almost wished she never had to use it.
